The most listening fun…

The most listening fun I’ve had this Christmas came courtesy of the wonderful Oxford American magazine: the double CD attached to their tenth anniversary music issue contains fifty-six tracks of southern American music, just about every single one of which is a gem, and many of which I didn’t know. The South being the South, the magazine was able to offer music from Big Star and Elvis Presley and the Staple Singers and Little Walter and Lucinda Williams; in a way, limiting yourself to popular music from below the Mason-Dixon line is no limit at all – like limiting yourself to Europe for an album entitled ‘Opera’s Greatest Hits’. Anyway, seek it out, if you live in the US; if you don’t, look at the tracklisting on their website and marvel.
